Explore the Library × Gizmo of The Week Building Topographic Maps If you have ever taken a bath while very dirty, you may have noticed a gritty “bathtub ring” left behind when the water drains out. An enormous example of this phenomenon can be seen in Lake Mead, a reservoir near Las Vegas, Nev. Decades of declining rainfall, combined with increasing demand for water, have caused water levels in the reservoir to gradually drop, leaving behind a ring of white rock. (The white results from minerals deposited on the rock surface under water.) Because the ring represents a water surface, the ring forms a line that is perfectly horizontal and of equal elevation above sea level. In other words, the ring is a contour line! Students can use a similar technique to create contour lines with the Building Topographic Maps Gizmo. A companion to the Reading Topographic Maps Gizmo, the Gizmo allows students to create contour lines by raising or lowering the water level in a landscape. Starting with a randomly generated 3D landscape, students can raise or lower the water level and then trace a contour line where the water meets the shore.
